Located in a remote southeastern corner of Oregon, the trek to the Pillars of Rome was part of a photographic quest to further explore my home state. An eight and half hour drive from Portland, the Pillars are definitely off the beaten path and are something few residents or visitors take the time to visit. They were on my must-see list, though, and I was looking forward to getting up close and capturing every possible angle. Unfortunately, my trek was stopped short as the area is not a park as I had thought, but is privately held land. With nowhere to go, I set up camp right on the side of the country dirt road with just enough time to capture the Pillars at sunset. While I didn’t quite make my destination, I got what I was after and will never forget the sheer size and beauty of the place. Even from a distance, the Pillars of Rome are awe-inspiring.
